Project Description

I am a women’s rights advocate promoting socially just, rights-based and gender-responsive biodiversity and forest policy, seeking a multidisciplinary learning environment for new perspectives and knowledge- and skill-sharing with like-minded, inspiring leaders to deepen my advocacy work.

I am active in the global feminist movement, particularly in international sustainable development and biodiversity policy spaces at the United Nations High Level Political Forum and Convention on Biological Diversity. I coordinate a capacity-building programme on women’s rights and gender-responsive sustainable development that supports grassroots environmental and Indigenous Peoples Organisations active in forest communities in 14 countries. The programme facilitates community workshops, capacity building and small grants to hundreds of community-based organisations, local forest-user groups and women’s collectives, focusing on several issues: community action planning to empower women and implement gender-responsive community forestry, traditional and customary rights, gender mainstreaming and inclusiveness programming in natural resources governance, food sovereignty and land rights, revival of Indigenous knowledge, food and seeds to build resilience to climate change, agro-ecology initiatives and community forest restoration, to name a few. I collect the lessons learned, impacts on women and their communities and policy recommendations from these processes at the grassroots level and feed this into policy advocacy at the international level.

I want to explore how I can further promote women’s priorities and needs and integrate interdisciplinary approaches and scientific evidence-base in my programme and advocacy efforts, and work together with the academic and the environmental justice movement. The collective support of academic and environmental justice and feminist movements to transform forest and biodiversity policies that respect the rights of women and their communities on the frontline is vital.
